  • Bold Colorful Art by Boothbay Artist:
    Melissa Thornton

    on exhibit from February 5 – March 19, 2013

You are invited to the Artist's Reception from 3-5 on Friday, February 15 Savory Maine Dining and Provisions in Damariscotta is pleased to exhibit the oil and pastel paintings and photographs of Boothbay artist Melissa Thornton from February 5th through March 19th, 2013.

Melissa Thornton describes herself as 'addicted' to bold, brilliant color in all aspects of her life...and she is dedicated to having, and helping others have, a bold colorful life..."a bold colorful life is a state of mind--you know who you are and live authentically; you choose to do the things you are passionate about; you surround yourself with colorful people who reflect your lifestyle and values; you create an environment that stimulates the very best you have to give." Not surprisingly, her business is called Bold Colorful Life, and includes the Bold Colorful Life Inn and Retreat Center in Boothbay, the Bold Colorful Life Gallery, and when she's not leading retreats or painting, she offers 'bold colorful life' coaching locally.

Melissa's journey to creativity began when she was a small child in the fifties. Her grandfather was a talented amateur cartoonist, her aunt a renowned pastel portrait artist, her father an inventive color scientist, her mother's passionate love of life centered in Nature. In this environment Melissa began with drawing, found an early, life-long love of natural photography, progressed to painting these images, with a special love of landscapes and flowers, and majored in Studio Art and English at Mount Holyoke College.

After graduation Melissa continued photographing and painting for fun and expressed her creativity in the business world, as well. She helped design the American Freedom Train, part of the American Bicentennial celebration; used her MBA from Tuck at Dartmouth to work in marketing, advertising and market research; then switched careers to become a spiritually-based psychotherapist and life coach, working with clients to find their bold and colorful life, by developing creative solutions to life challenges.

She is a founding member of the Lotus Circle, An Alliance for Healing, in Westport, CT and a founding member of the Sassy Sisters Healing Alliance in Boothbay, Maine. Melissa has studied at the Silvermine Guild School of Art, the Creative Arts Workshop and the Glass Source, among others. She paints boldly, often with palette knife or large brush and picks up pastels for the finer work. She lives her life as a natural adventure, reveling in Mother Nature's gifts and capturing them in dramatic oils and pastels, stunning natural photographs and colorful elegant jewelry. You can visit her gallery at

She loves to travel, hike and scuba dive, always carrying a camera or drawing pad. Her love of kayaking and natural beauty brought her to Maine, where she fell in love with the Boothbay peninsula and decided to spend the rest of her life here. Melissa has been building an Inn and Retreat Center in Boothbay for the past 6 years and currently holds Retreats of all kinds...including personal growth, spiritual centering, artistic self-expression and natural adventure.
